With senior technicians retiring in great numbers, able and ready replacements in short supply, and buses getting more complex with each passing year, transit agencies are struggling to keep an adequately staffed and skilled workforce. A time-tested method of passing skills from one generation to the next is through apprenticeship, where the majority of training takes place on the job through mentoring. This session will examine a national effort by the Transportation Learning Center and the Department of Labor to establish a registered apprenticeship program specifically for transit bus technicians.

Presenter: John Schiavone, Transportation Learning Center

Typically, bus fires can occur in a static or dynamic situation. In either case, they cause high anxiety and can be very expensive, especially if it’s a total loss. Fires always leave telltale evidence of their progression — but not always of their starting point, which is more commonly known as ignition point. This presentation will review a number of fascinating facts about bus fires and give participants insight into the work of a fire investigator in hopes of preventing bus fire situations at your operation.
